Divine direction means allowing God to lead while we follow without questions.
God’s desire, since the creation of man, is to give man divine directions (i.e. direct man’s ways in all things), though He made man with a free will. In Gen. 2:16-17 God, after He had formed man, gave him clear instructions “… saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
So, we find God issuing commandments, instructions, admonitions, etc, all through the scriptures. See Deut 15:5, 13:18.
Divine direction entails complete and absolute trust in God. Prov. 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Also see Gal 5:18.
One of the major means by which God gives divine direction, is through the Holy Spirit, which also is the certificate or proof of God’s sonship. Rom8:14.
The following are some of the benefits of divine direction:
1. Knowing where to be, what to do and at the right time; being in the right direction:
Prov. 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Isa 30:21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
Abraham and Lot in Gen.13:5-12.
2. Abundance:
Ps23:1-2 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
Psa. 105:37-41 He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them. He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night. The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river.
3. Protection/Defence:
Psa. 23:3-4 …He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. See also Jos 9:6-9, 14, and 19-20
4. Victory in battle: David obtained victory in all his battles because, each time, he sought and obtained divine direction:
2Sam 5:18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand. And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim.
2Sam 5:22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees. And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines. And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.
5. Certainty:
2Tim 4:6-8 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
6. Joy: By helping us to avoid sins and to repent if we do. Gal 5:16 and 22
16This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,…
7. Righting what was wrong: 2Sam 21:1-14
2Sam 21:1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
…14And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.
8. Enables you to know Gods promises, which builds confidence:
Zech 2:5 For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.
Psa 125:2 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.
3John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
9. Convicts us of our sins and helps us to make amends: 2 Sam 24:1-25
,,,2Sam 24:10 And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. 11For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying, 12Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.13So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
2Sa 24:25 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
10. Profits:
Isa 48:17 Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.
11. Peace like a river (i.e. abundant peace)
Isa 48:18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:
12. Righteousness:
After being saved by grace, we need divine direction to continue the race in righteousness. Isa 48:18, Psa 23:3
13. Benefits for your offsprings:
Isa 48:19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.
14. Restoration:
Psa 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
1Sam 30:8 And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
